This grove of Quaking Aspens (Populus tremuloides) is located in Southern California’s San Gorgonio Wilderness and the new Sand to Snow National Monument. It is one of only two aspen groves in California found outside the Sierra Nevada range. Once full of mature trees renowned for the beautiful sound of their leaves blowing in the wind and the golden color of their autumn foliage, the grove was devastated by the “Lake” fire in June and July of 2015. Although little above ground-level survived, aspens are blessed with a robust root system which can apparently survive even severe fire events stoked by drought and climate change. Three years later the grove is regenerating itself, with 2-meter-high saplings reaching up once more to the sun.
