此片摄于岳麓书院后院。这里有抄手长廊以及长凳，是很好的读书用功之处。从图中所示的小门进入，可去岳麓书院前门、文庙、花园和御书楼；沿着左侧小石桥往上走，即出岳麓书院，去达著名的爱晚亭。此小院重楼飞檐，树绿风静，人流稀少，颇为清幽。
历史上岳麓书院多次在战火中受损，最近一次1938年，日本战机轰炸湖南大学校园，岳麓书院部分建筑被毁。1941年4月日机再次轰炸湖南大学，岳麓书院御书楼、半学斋、静一斋等处均中弹倒塌，至1986年才完全修复。
