Cati Oren Erdemli Vr Mersin 1ab
Turkey
It is near Karaahmetli Neighborhood, which is 8 km to the northwest of Ayaş Neighborhood of Erdemli District, Mersin. The place was given the name Çatıören (literally: deriving from “roof”) because it is placed in between two high hills. The most important historical structure of this place is the Hermes Temple, which is located on the west of the modern settlement. The temple was built using the polygonal wall technique. Some part of the fundamental of the temple, which is dated to the 2nd – 1st century BC, was constructed on the bedrock. There is a tower on the east of the temple. Besides, it is possible to see the remains of small hoses from the Roman Period. There stands a church with three naves and multiple columns, built in the form of a basilica, next to the monumental tomb located on the northeast of the necropolis area. The church is dated to the early 6th century. Besides, there are several sarcophagi and tombs in the area. The place was settled during the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Periods.
