Golden Spike NHS - Last Spike Site
Utah

The Last Spike Site marks the exact spot where the Central Pacific Railroad & Union Pacific Railroad met here at Promontory Summit, Utah on May 10, 1869 marking the connection of the first Transcontinental Railroad from San Francisco, California to Omaha, Nebraska.  Today the site is part of the Golden Spike National Historic Site, the actual golden spike is located at a museum in California.  Much of the Transcontinental Railroad today has been removed, much of the metal scrapped for use during World War II.
