Lake Tyrrell
Victoria

Lake Tyrrell is Victoria's largest salt lake covering 20,860 hectares. Lake Tyrrell is located 350 kilometres north west of Melbourne.

The Lake is quite ancient and its environment  is host to Mallee reptiles, kangaroos, emus, white-faced chats, and small islands are used as breeding ground by thousands of seagulls.

The lake is quite ancient. It may have been formed by drifting sand blocking the passage of Tyrrell Creek. Over time it became a giant salt basin due to the flow of subterranean saline water and the run-off from Tyrrell Lake.

Over 100,000 tonnes of salt is extracted from the lake each year. The Mallee Rally, an offroad desert car rally, is held here on the Queen's Birthday weekend in June each year.
