Mut Citadel Mut Vr Mersin 109
Turkey
The original construction date of the citadel located in the center of the modern Mut District is unknown. Evliya Çelebi explained where the name of the district derived from in these words: “Yakup Bey of Karamanids attacked with a lot of soldiers to get the Citadel from Greeks, but all of his soldiers died here. Then, they called the place ‘Darment – Dar-ul Mawt – Dar-ı Mut (literally: the Land of Death)”. Later, another leader from the Karamanids, İbrahim Bey, captured the citadel and got it completely demolished. After the Ottomans took over the citadel, they gave the final look of the structure during Sultan Ahmed I. The citadel is supported with diagonal and square bastions, and the structure is now composed of an inner fortress and external fortification walls.
