Initially named “Shoushan Tunnel”, Sizihwan Bay Tunnel was built by Sanjiro Umino in 1927 (the 2nd Year of Japanese Emperor Showa), with a total length of 260 meters, a width of 6 meters and a height of 3.6 meters.The tunnel is divided into the front, middle and rear section, and the entrances at two ends were made of imitation rocks cast in concrete.The tunnel was once used as a bomb shelter during the American bombing raids in World War II.Today it is the link between National Sun Yat-sen University and Linhai Road in Hamasen.Students or visitors can explore the historical significance of the tunnel as they walk through it.
The Chiang Kai-Shek Villa situated on the campus of the National Sun Yat-sen University was built in 1937 (the 2nd Year of Japanese Emperor Showa).In 1952, the early days of post-World War II, it served as the official residence of the late president Chiang Kai-Shek in southern Taiwan.Today the villa is a two-story Japanese-style building and displays Chiang Kai-Shek’s personal vehicle from Nanking, China.The main building is currently operated by the National Sun Yat-sen University as an artistic and cultural exhibition venue known as the “Siwan Art Gallery.
