St. Andrews is home of St. Andrews University – oldest university in Scotland and third oldest university in the UK – just after Oxbridge. St. Andrews is also known as home of golf. The first castle at this site was built in the 12th century. After the reformation the castle of the archbishop quickly fell into ruins in the 17th century. Some of the stone were used for the improvement of the pier.
