Sunrise over Galoot, Snow Canyon State Park, Utah, USA
Utah

Three times in the last 1.5 million years lava has flowed down Snow Canyon, stopping erosion of the covered sandstone and forcing runoff to move westward to carve a new canyon.  The dark bluffs to the east mark the oldest flow at 1.5 million years.  Below that, lava flows originating from the north swept in around 1 million years ago.  The newest flows occurred only 10-20 thousand years ago and blanket the middle of the canyon.

Our vantage point is a mound of sandstone named Galoot.  Just a few feet away, Galoot is covered in Moquie Marbles, small (and sometimes large) natural sandstone marbles formed by iron deposits left by water.  The iron came from, among other places, the now white sandstone to the north.
