To move his cattle from winter to summer grazing areas, an early Utah pioneer, John Atlantic Burr, cut switchbacks through a notch in the Waterpocket Fold. The simple cattle path later became part of the larger Burr Trail, running 60 plus miles from Boulder, Utah south to the Bullfrog Basin on the northern end of Lake Powell. Much of the trail was paved in the 1990s with a short section remaining unpaved within the boundar of Capitol Reef National Park.
