This restored horizontal water mill near Dounby on Orkney's Mainland is the last surviving example of a click mill. It was built in the early 1820s and was operational for around 60 years.

Click mills get the name from the sound made by wooden pegs as grain was fed from a hopper into the millstone for grinding. Also known as Norse mills, as they date back to Viking times, they were once common across the north and west of Scotland. They were effective at grinding grain using a low volume of water.
