This is the second lighthouse built to mark the mouth of the Umpqua River, the first having been destroyed by waves and floodwaters. The new light was first lit in 1894, a prudent distance back from the shore and 165 feet above sea level. It contains a first order Fresnel lans that produces two white flashes followed by one red.
