The waterworks at Rotes Tor were built in several stages from 1416 onwards with three water towers, two fountain masters’ houses and the aqueduct, which have all been preserved. The lower parts of the water towers still show the Gothic - style elements from the previous constructions. The Große Wasserturm (large water tower) (started i n 1463), the Kleine Wasserturm (from 1470 onwards) and the Kastenturm (from 1599 onwards) were built on defense towers that were part of the city’s fortifications. Renovation works uncovered exceptionally well - preserved red chalk inscriptions and the remains of wall paintings
