Wild Garlic. Hanging Lane, Combe Down, Bath. VR
Bath

This image has been re-mastered for Virtual Reality using a suitable viewer.

This secluded path, verged in late spring with heady wild garlic is a by-way, part of an ancient network of tracks which connected towns and villages around the country. It links Combe Down with Widcombe

Some call this Hanging Lane after a man who was found hanging under the bridge or perhaps it led to a field where local criminals were hung. Only the bravest go there at night. Those who don't believe in ghosts refer to it as Pope's Walk - after a landscape gardener who advised on nearby Prior Park.

The 18th Century bridge must be one of the oldest flyovers in the world. The land on either side of the track was owned by local businessman Ralph Allen. The bridge allowed easy access between the two parts of his estate.

The bridge at the top must be one of the earliest flyovers in the world. It was part of a private road network around the Prior Park estate of 18th Century entrepeneur, Ralph Allen.
