Braganca, Church of Sao Vicente,
Portugal

In the middle of the century. XIII the parish of S. Vicente is already mentioned. Due to the characteristics of the headboard, the primitive temple in the Romanesque style has been framed. It seems to be the desire, often manifested, to age the origins (both of heritage and institutions) in an exercise of nobility and dignification. The same architectural features (also present, for example, in S. Francisco) lead, however, other authors to include it in the set of Gothic works. Later refurbishments and expansions - 16th, 17th and 18th centuries - are justified by the state of degradation that the Church reached, by its location in a multifunctional square (even used to run bulls) and by having the Santo Cristo brotherhood in it. (the most important in the city). The Mannerist portal stands out and, in the interior, the chapel of Santo Cristo (17th century) that shows the use of archaic solutions (launch of ogival cover). In the Baroque period, gilt carvings (first half of the 18th century) invade the chancel (triumphal arch, altar, ceiling), in an artistic expression that aimed to make the temple a “Domus Aurea”.
