Castle Rock CG, Fremont Indian State Park, Utah, USA
Utah

The Castle Rock Campground derives its name from the many turrets and towers worn by erosion of the canyon walls.  Once a primitive forest service campground, the site has been upgraded with modern bathrooms and serves as the campground for the nearby Fremont Indian State Park.  The sites are well shaded and campers are treated to both sunrise and sunset lighting of the towers on either side of the canyon on either side of the day.

In this view, we are still in the shade at the east side of the canyon while the western wall is bright with the morning sunlight.

The soft pale rock is part of a large volume of ash deposited by volcanic eruptions here in the Tushar mountains of Utah around 15 million years ago.  The ash solidified as it cooled into distinct layered rock known as tuff.  Rock fragments are visible embedded here and there in the pale tuff, caught up and deposited with the ash during the volcanic eruptions.
