過去的大溪橋是日治時代的興建鐵線橋，一直是大溪鎮對外聯絡的唯一橋樑，因此與當地人的日常生活有很密切的聯繫。它不僅是大溪鎮民交通運輸的重要橋樑，也是大溪鎮溪東、溪西區住民們來往的必經之地。自蔣公逝世奉厝大溪慈湖後，人潮熙來攘往使得大溪觀光業迅速崛起，原本的舊橋已不敷使用，再加上經歷多次水災使得整座橋已經不適，因此大溪鎮公所投入七千八百多萬元，來進行從事環境美化的工程。
