Independence Trail West flume [1]
California

The Independence Trail is located in the Gold Rush Country near Nevada City, California.  It is one of the most popular trails in the area, being level in elevation as it follows the Excelsior gold mining ditch, which was built in 1859 to transport water from the Yuba River to a nearby area for hydraulic mining.  This view shows Flume 28, where a bridge over 500 feet long was built over Rush Creek to transport the water.   Of course this current bridge is a reconstruction of the former w/ a viewing platform below that was unstable & currently off limits.  Rush Creek itself plummets over a small waterfall at this vantage point.   The trail also gets the notion of being the first wheelchair nature trail approved by the ADA.
