Felix Romuliana near Gamzigrad in Serbia enters UNESCO list

The World Heritage Committee finalized Friday 2007 additions to UNESCO's World Heritage List. Serbia’s Gamzigrad-Romuliana, Palace of Galerius is among the sites inscribed on the list Friday, alongside Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape in Azerbaijan, and Central University City Campus of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma in Mexico. The Late Roman fortified palace compound and memorial complex of Gamzigrad-Romuliana, Palace of Galerius, in the east of Serbia, was commissioned by Emperor Caius Valerius Galerius Maximianus, in the late 3rd and early 4th century. It was known as Felix Romuliana, named after the Emperor's mother. The site consists of fortifications, the palace in the north-western part of the complex, basilicas, temples, hot baths, memorial complex, and a tetrapylon. The site is described as offering a unique testimony of the Roman building tradition marked by the ideology of the period of the Second Tetrachy. The group of buildings is also unique in its intertwining of ceremonial and memorial functions. In a decision unprecedented in the history of UNESCO's Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, the Committee deleted one property, the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary, from the List because of Oman's failure to preserve the outstanding universal value of the Sanctuary. The committee said in a statement the Middle East sultanate of Oman was "destroying the outstanding universal value'' of the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary by cutting its size by 90 percent and planning to prospect for oil in the region. The Committee Thursday made five new entries on the list, among which is also Mehmed Pasa Sokolovic Bridge of Višegrad in Bosnia. After the total of 22 additions made this year in a week long session of the Committee, UNESCO's World Heritage List now numbers 851 properties. It is 60km from Soko Banja spa.
