Inside Kilmory Knap Chapel, Knapdale
Scotland

Kilmory Knap Chapel is a 13th century Highland church built to a simple rectangular plan. It houses a large collection of late medieval West Highland grave-slabs, many of which commemorate members of the medieval MacMillan clan.

The grave slabs feature effigies of armoured warriors armed with spears and broadswords, clerics depicted in prayer and wearing vestments, and a fashionably dressed nobleman. They also show a range of motifs, including swords, crosses, galleys, animals, monsters, combs and mirrors and craftsmans’ tools of trade. The most notable piece is the MacMillans Cross. Erected in the late 1400s, it commemorates Alexander MacMillan keeper of the nearby Castle Sween on behalf of the Lord of the Isles.
