九龙池在翠湖东北,为湖中之泉,有九个出水泉眼,传说为九龙所居,汇水成池,故名九龙池,旧时还以九龙池统称翠湖。

九龙池是昆明自来水的第一个水源。从1918年到1957年,昆明自来水的供应,全赖九龙池泉水,其时日出水量为3000立方米左右。
清末民初,昆明市区居民生活用水,均以水井为主,河水为辅,以小水桶系绳提水,俗称“打水”。1915年云南自来水公司在九龙池建自来水厂,1918年5月,水厂开始供水,因水费高昂,用水者全为机关、学校、公共场所和绅富人家,一般市民,仍饮井水,“民风初开,多为观望”。抗战时期,昆明人口骤增,用户渐多,自来水供不应求,地势较高之处,离水厂稍远之地,供水困难,民间有“自来水不来水”之说,“清泉业”久兴不衰,还有专门挑送九龙池自来水者,以应市民之需。
20世纪50年代以后,九龙池自来水厂几经改进,供水质量大有改观,但随着城市发展,九龙池水已不敷民需,现昆明自来水改从松花坝水库和滇池外海取水,然九龙池作为昆明最早的自来水源,却值得纪念。
