Kaohsiung Rose Basilica
Kaohsiung

There is this elegant church that always shows up on TV commercials, and it was always assumed to be shot in some foreign country, only that it is actually the largest basilica in Taiwan - the Kaohsiung Rose Basilica.

Located at the intersection of Wufu 3rd Road and Shihjhong 1st Road, the Basilica has been the religious strength of countless southern residents for over a century.  The Basilica was rebuilt to become an aesthetic tower incorporating Roman and Gothic styles.  Tall towers pointing to the sky, arched lattice windows and rose windows, all display the Gothic architecture, elegant and beautiful.  Inside, the 7 pairs of columns divide the central hall and the vestibules on the two sides, while the mezzanine and the roof are structured with arch truss.  The altar is an octagonal ring, with its own unique charm.  Above the main door is the Stele of Imperial Decree from the Qing Dynasty, with the coat of arms of the pope and the cardinal flanking its sides.
The Rose Basilica is one of three major basilicas in Asia.  Elegant on the outside, solemn on the inside, it is one of a kind among the modern urbane architecture, definitely worth a trip.
