The official name for Yinyan Sea is "LianDongWan", but since the gulf appears in swirling colors of blue and brown in a shape closely resembling the Yin-Yang, it is more widely known as the Yinyan Sea. The different shades of these two colors blend within the sea, and morph into various shapes along with the constant weather changes in the region.

The phenomenon at Yinyan Sea can be attributed to human mining activities; it is an acid mine drainage (AMD) effect.
