New Shrine Room Sri Dalada Maligawa
Sri Lanka

The new shrine, which contains all these was built during the custody period of Lay Custodian Hon. P.B. Nugawela that’s during 1916 – 1937.

Surely you have visited the new shrine of Sri Dalada Maligawa. It is a 3 storeyed building located behind the “Wedasitina Maligawa”. After gaining blessings from the Sacred Tooth Relic, one will come to the new shrine. When you turn to your left as you enter there is a huge Buddha statue. This statue is made using Thai or “Siam” style.
This main statue is surrounded by other statues of different styles and other artifacts. These are offerings by heads of states and other overseas dignitaries when they come to pay their respect to the Sacred Tooth Relic. There are also statues of 28 Buddhas known as “Atavisi Buddha statues”
The artist have created the history of the Tooth Relic from the time it was handed over to Princess Hemamala & Prince Dantha by King Guhaseeha. How the Sacred Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka and the incidents afterwards are beautifully painted on canvas. The incidents which took place during the British ruling is also included in this collection of paintings.
