Osorno is a municipality and city located in southern Chile, capital of the village of that name and Osorno Province in the Region of Los Lagos. It has an area of approximately 6805 km ².
The city of Osorno is located 945.8 km south of the capital, Santiago, 110 miles north of Puerto Montt (the regional capital), 110 km south of Valdivia (capital of Rivers Region) and 232 km west of the city Argentina San Carlos de Bariloche, which is connected through the international Route 215.
The city has a population of 132 245 inhabitants according to the 2002 census, with an estimated 273 589 in 2012, being the sixteenth largest city in Chile and ninth in population density (4156 inhabitants / km ²). 8.7% of the people said to belong to any ethnic origin.
Osorno, well known for its large number of people of German ancestry from that area settled in the mid-nineteenth century.
The city is connected to the rest of the country, on Route 5 South, which runs throughout Chile, with the axis between two regional capitals, such as Puerto Montt and Valdivia. One of its main access is the Airport Carlos Hott Siebert Cañal Under.
The city is home to Episcopal Diocese of Osorno, which covers the entire province of Osorno.
