In the northwestern corner of Bulgaria, among the slopes of Balkan mountains there is a little town, Belogradchik, surrounded by strange rock formations. The sandstone rock columns make ideal this place to build walls of a fortress among them, hence a part of the walls are natural. The history of Belogradchik Fortress started in the age of the Roman Empire, there are parts from that age still now. In the Middle Ages it was extended and remained in use till the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885.
