Dieser Hauptplatz von Siena ist von mittelalterlichen Palästen umgeben und dient dem berühmten Palio als Austragungsort. Vom Marmorbrunnen Fonte Gaia an der Nordwestseite senkt er sich ab zur Kanalisationsöffnung die das Regenwasser aufnimmt. Unweit von hier, am tiefsten Punkt der Stadt, steht der 102m hohe Torre della Mangia, der von 1325 bis 1344 errichtet wurde. Er wurde dem Palazzo Pubblico angeschlossen, dessen Bau 1297 begonnen wurde. Auch heute noch dient er als Rathaus.

The regional capital is Florence and the other provinces are: Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.
