Looking at the baseball fields at Shady Rest Park in Mammoth Lakes, California. The area has plenty of hiking opportunities. Very near the area is the Old & New Shady Rest Campground w/ the hillsides leading towards the top of Mammoth Knolls.
On May 25, 2003, a hiker w/ his dog stumbled upon a human skull & later in the week more human remains of a female were found burned on the ridgeline about 1,000 feet above Mammoth Lake on Mammoth Knolls. She had likely died 6-9 months prior w/ snow preventing an earlier discovery. It was determined that she was a homicide victim of stabbing & isotopic analysis determined she was from Mexico & of Zapotic Indian descent, even pinpointing down to two villages in Southern Mexico where she was from. Despite a couple visits to gather DNA from the two villages, she could not be identified. However in August 2021, a DNA match using genetic genealogy identified her as Isabel Sanchez Bernal from Puebla, Mexico. Very quickly afterwards the arrest of Diego Santiago Hernandez-Antonia, age 47, was made in connection to her murder, thus ending an 18-year mystery.
The Shady Rest Park area is also one of the last known sightings of Matthew Brian Greene, a 39-year old avid hiker & climber who disappeared on July 13, 2013. Visiting from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, he experienced vehicle trouble & was getting his vehicle fixed. He left the area presumably to go on a hike & may have been picked up by someone or gotten injured in the woods. He never returned to his camp at the park & remains missing to this day.
