The Bishop’s Throne is also known as the Cathedra. A Cathedral is so named because it houses a bishop’s throne.
Durham Cathedral is a Norman building constructed between 1093 and 1133 in the Romanesque style. It was founded as a monastic cathedral built to house the shrine of St Cuthbert. He lived as a monk, bishop, and then hermit, on Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne. He is revered as the North of England's best-loved saint. The cathedral also houses the tomb of ‘The Venerable Bede’. He is regarded as the greatest of all the Anglo-Saxon scholars during the 7th and 8th centuries.
