The outer ward at Criccieth Castle, Gwynedd
Wales

Criccieth Castle is located on a high rocky headland overlooking Cardigan Bay. It was built by the Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great), in the early 13th century. His grandson, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd (Llywelyn the Last), later added two new towers, an outer ward and curtain walls.

In 1283, the castle was captured by Edward I who subsequently modified it for his own purposes. It returned to Welsh control in 1404 after a revolt led by Owain Glyndŵr. He promptly had it destroyed so that it had no further value as a military stronghold.
