St. Mary, built in the late 15th century, is located in a vineyard above the little Franconian town of Volkach. Volkach is one of the major towns in the Franconian wine area – most famous for its “Silvaner” grape in the equally famous “Bocksbeutel” – a type of bottle specific for this area. In 1962 the church was the set for one of the most famous art thefts in German history: the so called “Madonnenraub” – Madonna robbery.
