Abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaca, tomb of Ines de Castro

The tomb of Inês de Castro, with recumbent statue and canopy is surrounded by angels. Around it are the Castro family. The tomb of Inês depicts the Crucifiction ant the slages of the Cross, the last Judgement, God presiding over the Divine Tribunal and two small windows where Pedro and Inês are praying. Opposite the tomb of King Pedro I is that of his mistress Inês de Castro. The reason for this is so that the lovers might see each other "as soon as they rise the tomb on the day of Ressurrection". They are masterpieces of our medieval sculpture (14th century), probably the work of Portuguese artists.
