The Still House at the Bruichladdich distillery, Islay

The Hebridean island of Islay, is renowned for malt whisky and there are currently eight active distilleries on the island. Bruichladdich was built in 1881, closed in 1994 and reopened in 2001. It is the only privately-owned distillery on Islay and the original Victorian machinery is still in use today.

The image shows the Still House with one of the two pairs of stills, and the Spirit Safe in which the distilled spirit is selected for sending to the vats prior to being placed in a cask. Note the padlock on the Safe which was traditionally placed by Customs and Excise.
