潮宗街西起湘江路，东至黄兴北路(原北正街)，是长沙城仅存的4条古麻石街之一，原长511米，今存约400米，宽9米，为旧时最宽的街道。潮宗街原名朝宗街，因临城门朝宗门而名。朝宗，朝拜祖宗之意。因旧时街口聚居着许多挑河水卖的脚夫，终日街头淌满河水，“朝”遂演化成“潮”。潮宗街又名草场门正街，明清时是长沙县署和临湘驿站所在地，行人往来，车水马龙，旅店业特别发达。旧时潮宗街是出潮宗门达湘江河运码头的必经之道，因而成为米业、堆栈业的集中之地，尤以米市闻名于世。
这里是长沙最古老的街道，街道轮廓在战国时期就以成型，至今无大变动。历经演变，遗留诸多历史文化古迹。
