Coimbra, New cathedral, Aerial view, facade

The new Cathedral has been installed since 1772 in the old church of the Jesuit College, behind the Faculty of Medicine. Originally, the Colégio dos Jesuítas (Colégio das Onze Mil Virgens), which had been installed in Coimbra in 1541. The church began to be built in 1598, following a project of the official architect of the Jesuits in Portugal, Baltazar Álvares, influenced by the church of S. Vicente_de_Fora "Monastery of São Vicente de Fora de Lisboa. The works were very slow and the cult only started in 1640, with the temple being inaugurated only in 1698.
