Elephant Head, Antelope Island State Park, Utah, USA

From the Elephant Head trail, you can see evidence of ancient Lake Bonneville, the ancestor of the modern Great Salt Lake. The flat “benches” or steps at regular distances above the modern lake mark the shoreline of the ancestral lake where waves pounded rock into sand. Along the trail west to Elephant Head point, watch for rocks that look like cement with lots of stones. Called diamictite, these rocks were probably deposited by ancient glaciers 1.5 billion years ago. Above the cement like layer, you'll see a tan-pink rock that looks a bit like marble, called dolomite. The dolomite forms some of the light colored cliffs and ridges you walk across as you head west to Elephant Head.
