The Caltrain Peninsula commuter service (formerly the Southern Pacific) never reached downtown San Francisco. There is now an efficient transfer point with the Muni Metro light rail. In a few years the 4th Street line will feed into the underground Central Subway, leading directly to Union Square and Chinatown. Maybe someday Caltrain and High Speed Rail will continue underground from here to the new terminal on Mission Street.
