In 2011-13 the historic lighthouse and supporting buildings on Heceta Head were restored to their 1894 appearance. The brown color of the ocean here is a late summer phenomenon caused by strong westerly winds concentrating phytoplankton along the coast, often accompanied by massive herring runs and lots of greedy seabirds.
