McCloud lava tubes skylight

Double skylight opening in a lava tube near McCloud, California, most likely formed from an ancient eruption of Mt. Shasta.  The main entrance is a collapse pit with two ways to go, accessible by a bit of crawling.  This is the northerly direction which has a lot of breakdown & crawling, ultimately opening up to this lit oasis of mossy rocks & mist w/ plenty of red-breasted nuthatches flying about.  Beyond that the cave hardly goes more than 100 feet further into more breakdown.  Leftover 2x4s adorn the base as well as the remains of an old ladder.  One can still climb the rock piled up & hoist themselves out of this entrance.  The southern direction has ceilings up to 30 feet high & a mixture of breakdown & original passage w/ some occasional unique sand castle formations, nearly 1,000 feet in length as the ceiling drops down to the floor.  These caves have been known as ice caves since before 1935.
