Willamette Stone

Willamette Stone State Park is located just west of Portland, Oregon & marks the intersection & origin of both the Willamette Meridian & Base Line.  This location designates the current grid & township system utilized throughout the Pacific Northwest to mark properties.  The mark was originally placed with a red cedar stake on June 4, 1851 by the Survey General of the Oregon Territory.  On July 25, 1885 the stake was replaced by a stone obelisk marked with the words "BASE" & "LINE" & on the other side "WILL" & "MER".  The Willamette Stone was vandalized in the 1980s & replaced with the current markers seen here.
