Sunset view from the top of Initial Point (elev. 3,240') near Melba, Idaho. The site marks the intersection & origin of both the Boise Meridian & Base Line. This location designates the current grid & township system utilized throughout the Idaho Territory to mark properties. The base line runs from Nevada to British Columbia & passes through the namesake city of Meridian, Idaho. The mark first made here was on April 19, 1867 & today one can see a round brass marker indicating the precise survey landmark. There has been significant vandalism at this location over the decades - right now the site has been cleaned up well though access to Initial Point requires going on a rutty road.

There is a possibility it was derived from a Native American phrase. Idaho is very mountainous and is a popular outing destination of the outdoorsman.
