Built in 1914, Kaohsiung Harbor Museum was the former “Customs and Duties Office of Kaohsiung Harbor” during the Japanese Occupation, which later reorganized as the “Harbor Affairs Bureau” and operated as the operation headquarter of the Port of Kaohsiung. With a glorious history, the two-story Baroque-style red-brick building was once in danger of being torn down due to aging. However, due to its historical and cultural significance, Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau (KHB) has restored this building in 1997 for the use of the Kaohsiung Harbor Museum. As part of the KHB anniversary celebration event, the museum opened in 2002 for public access. It is now managed by KHB of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, maintaining a complete record of the harbor’s history and exhibiting the precious cultural artifacts collected since its opening for more than a hundred years.
