Leiria, Casa dos Pintores, Jewish Quarter

Casa dos Pintores, a building of medieval origin, is located in the center of the Jewish quarter, next to the old Largo dos Banhos, being one of the rare buildings that testify to the oldest housing architecture in the Historic Center. The designation Casa dos Pintores is due to the large number of artists who portray its facade. It has two townhouses, located at the top of a small block, which was integrated into medieval Jewry. This house of medieval origin, located next to the old Largo dos Banhos, corresponding to the junction of two buildings, as a result of a process that took place over at least five centuries.

Casa dos Pintores, one of the rare buildings that testify to the oldest housing architecture in the Historic Center of Leiria, will have had the functions of a store, grocery store, barber shop, and tavern, on the ground level. At the level of the upper floors it would be used for housing and domestic workshops.

It currently houses the Misericórdia Church, the center of Intercultural Dialogue in Leiria.
