Mausoleum Of The Fearless King Mezgit Fortress Silifke Vr Mersin 33a
Mezgit Kale (fortress), which is locally known as the Mausoleum of the Fearless King, is located on a hill 2 km to the east of Paslı. It is one of the biggest of the temple-tombs of Cilicia. This mausoleum, which is dated to the 2nd century AD or the 3rd century AD, is quite well-preserved. The mausoleum is 7.80 m high and there are corbels in the middle of the capped columns. The foot gaps on the middle two of these corbels indicate that there used to be statues standing on the tomb. There are four more examples of the same corbels in the sepulcher. On the rear pediment of the mausoleum, there hang the reliefs of a shield in the middle and swords and scorpions on both sides. The most important feature of the mausoleum is the phallos relief carved on the sidewall stone of the front podium. Other remains worth seeing around the mausoleum include the cistern and olive oil workshops.
