Ponte Vella, Ourense, Galicia, Spain

The Ponte Vella (Old Bridge), over the Miño River, in Ourense, Galicia, Spain Also known as Ponte Romana (Roman Bridge) or Ponte Maior (Main Bridge), was built in the first century, under the rule of Emperor Augustus, as part of the Via XVIII or Via Nova. While the arches are dated in Middle Ages and after, the foundations are still from the Roman ages. The main arch spans 43 m, reaches 38 m in height and it is said that, until the XIX century, was the longest in Spain. As part of the Via de la Plata (Way of Saint James), it has been a key element for the development of the city of Ourense, and nowadays is one of its main symbols, along with the Burgas (thermal springs) and Saint Martin's Cathedral.
