Sabugal, Vilar Maior Castle, aerial view

Medieval castle with an irregular oval layout with a square-shaped keep, with three registers, straight arrows, a broken arch door at the level of the second register with access through the adarve. The keep is attached to the exterior, indicating that it was built after the walls. Outside the west side, the wall corresponding to the outer walled belt can be seen to start. It was in Vilar Maior that D. João (son of D. Pedro and D. Inês de Castro), shortly after murdering his wife, D. Maria Teles, came to seek refuge. He ended up fleeing to Castile, and later fought against the Portuguese in Trancoso and Elvas, alongside the Spanish.
