Santa Maria da Feira, Castle, barbaca

The castle of Santa Maria da Feira is one of the most notable Portuguese monuments for the diversity of defensive resources used between the centuries. XI and XVI and that makes it a unique piece of Portuguese military architecture.

In the century. XI- XII time of the Christian reconquest, the castle is built on a former Roman castrum, and only the ground floor of the maintenance tower and the shape of the liquorice remain.

In 1128 this castle is the scene of the revolt of D. Afonso Henriques against D. Teresa, his mother.

In the century. 14 the walled fence is reconstructed, of which only the route will remain. In the second half of the century. 15 the castle undergoes a major renovation and expansion. It was at this time that the mayor's first palace was built. It is the adaptation of the castle to war with weapons of fire.
