St. Michaels Church, Croft Castle

This 13th Century church has been the family church for the Croft family since it was built. St. Michael's sits adjacent to the Croft Castle, now a manor house with castellated towers. The castle is cared for by the National Trust but members of the Croft family still live in part of it.

There has been a building on the site since the 11th Century and for all that time it has been the family home of the Croft family. The current building started as a castle in the 14th Century but was extensively altered to what is there today.

The tomb that can be seen against the wall is the tomb of Sir Richard Croft (1430-1509), a royal official for Kings Edward IV, Edward V, Richard III, and Henry VII. The church itself is not looked after by the National Trust but is still used as it was intended, holding regular but infrequent services. It is a peaceful place where you can sit and contemplate the busy world outside.
