temple-of-poseidon-sounio-athens-greece

A wonderful afternoon walk around the archeological findings at Cape Sounion which is the southern spot of Attiki prefecture. According to legend, Sounion is the place where Aegeus, king of Athens, leapt to his death off the cliff, when he saw the black sail on his son Theseus’s ship returning from Crete. Theseus went to Creete to kill Minotaur, a monster which was half a man and half a bull. He had promised his father that if he survived the contest, he would put a white sail. Drunk of his glory he forgot to put the while sail so his father Aegeus forced himself into death, jumping into the sea from Cape Sounion cliff, giving his name to the Aegean Sea.
