Temple Trinity, North Uist

The remote ruins of Trinity Temple (Teampall na Trianaid) are thought to be the oldest centre of teaching and learning in Scotland. The medieval monastery and college was founded around 1200. Although largely destroyed after the Reformation it continued as a place of education up until the 18th century.

The ruins stand adjacent to the Ditch of Blood, which commemorates the Battle of Carinish, that took place in 1601. The skirmish is reputed to be the last clan battle to have been fought on Scottish soil with traditional swords, bows and arrows.
